Narrative for SIS short film

Research

Group L was introduced to storytelling to inform our film's brief, 'Change the Narrative.' We explored the types of storylines used within the three-act structure, such as Joseph Campbell's Heroes Journey. We eventually decided to explore the power of fantasy.

One group member suggested a story about a cleanliness-obsessed serial killer. We wanted an anti-hero female character, one “who lived by their own rules" (Tally, 2016, p. 22).

Pre-production

We were able to carry out a practice shoot in our appointed roles. I offered to be the DOP. This role requires “the ability to creatively use ﬁlm language to help the director interpret a script, story or idea and turn it into images” (Hoser, 2018, p. 4). Putting the narrative and visual storytelling into context was greatly aided by the session's practical element.

During the pre-production stage, our director left the course. I was appointed director instead. Although anxious, I appreciated the opportunity that the group had given me.

Scripts

I practiced screenplay format using Celtx and collaborated on drafts of the film with my group. During script table reads, the class was able to dive into the plot, giving and receiving feedback about the character's journey.

Shooting Script

Preparing for the production stage involved the precise determination of timings, shots, equipment, and location. I created both a theoretical and visual shooting script, and in so doing, was able to mock up a layout plan for the art director and DOP.
